Regarding downloads, usually reputable vendors and sites will continue to exist and would provide significant advanced notice if they were to go down (in which case you could probably transfer the license to the plugin maker). We're currently on a slow move from AMD64 to ARM chips in personal computers so you'll probably see a similar thing in 15-20 years. For example, most DAWs have stopped or are stopping support for 32-bit VSTs, so if you have a 32-bit-only VST from way back when, it will no longer work. Where it gets tricky is when there's fundamental architecture incompatibilities. You can still download these plugins today if you search hard enough, and they still work, and some people still swear by them.

The reality is the plugin format changes every decade or so and it’s a nightmare. I think it’s important to pick a reputable developer with longevity in mind. Plug-in instruments like omnisphere and u-he have lasted over a decade and still some of the best.
